It has almost been two weeks since I turned nineteen, which in B.C., Canada is officially an adult. How does it feel to be an adult? Great, any other exuberant word would not be fitting for this answer as this is just a number. Ever since I have been young, becoming “of age” was some sort of fantasy that I destined for a huge ridiculous Hollywood style party and for the universe to zap me into a whole new being. Sounds ridiculous? I think yes, but a girl can dream right? Now that it’s finally here, my thoughts have done a 360. It’s the little things that meant much more than the flashy party stuff. To be quite frank, becoming an adult is so much more than being able to go into 19+ places/events or being able to drink. Of course it can make life a whole lot more exciting, brings opportunities for new stories and memories, and allows for new experiences, but being an adult is so much more than that. It’s a chance to be seen in a new light by peers or by those above you, brings about a whole new set of milestones and means that acting silly isn’t childish, it’s in fact a way of expressing youthfulness šŸ˜‰ Anyway, below you can take a peak as to what I wore on the first day of adulting. As well, below that are 19 things I have learned on the way of turning this age.

19 of the most important things I’ve learned so far (in no particular order) :

  1. The importance of value
  2. How strong & healthy you feel when you you’re consistent with some form of physical activity
  3. What it feels like to crank up the music with the windows rolled down
  4. Something you’ve heard so many times… is so much more than high school
  5. To balance work with life but find a way to get experience
  6. To dip your feet in the water and try something that isn’t considered an everyday activity
  7. Even if it’s just one person, having a true best friend is a gift
  8. You don’t miss out on a lot if you don’t attend high school parties
  9. Milestones are only as good as you wish them to be
  10. To not take anything for granted
  11. Walks are good for the mind, body & soul
  12. That I’m glad I didn’t spend any of my childhood money while growing up
  13. Building a healthy relationship with siblings makes life way more pleasant
  14. Seeing a scenic part of nature that looks like a painting or smelling something in nature that you want to capture in a bottle is the most beautiful thing
  15. The power of a compliment (or a good novel!)
  16. Name brands or more expensive items are not always better quality
  17. Always, always, always go with your gut instinct
  18. Finding a way to express yourself ,through creativity, whether it be writing, music, etc. ,  when there are negativities in life is a wonderful coping mechanism
  19. To treat yourself with respect and realize that it is easy for oneself to change throughout the years but be aware of if it is for the better version of you or not

I must admit, being able to show a piece of identification when asked by an official feels like the power is in your pocket. Not to mention the other cool things like being able to feed your shopping addiction and get a credit card (this is a joke, being wise with money is so crucial!) , buying a lottery ticket and making more important decisions. However becoming an adult also comes with responsibilities and a time to start, if you haven’t, becoming more independent.

Sending love around the world,

Taylor xx
