MAT Trip 2017: Second Day Touring Cali

Toured the Graystone Mansion estate. This beautifully manicured yard and gardens gives the unmistakeable aura that you really are somewhere important. A little history behind it…

  • Moved into in 1928 by Edward “Ned” Laurence Doheny, Jr. and Lucy Smith of Pasadena along with their five children
  • Original construction cost was $3,166,578.12
  • A murder-suicide took place in 1929 where Ned was shot by one of his close friends
  • The original land was sold to the Paul Trousdale Corporation
  • The other 18.3 acres sld to Henry Crown of Chicago-based Park Grey Corporation then the City of Beverly Hills purchased it
  • Mansion is 46,054 square feet and has 52 livable rooms

See more information on their website here (where this info. was found).

List of movies filmed at this location can be found here including Gilmore Girls (my aunt & I both love this show!), Spider Man, Ghostbusters and X-Men.

I wish I had read up on it’s history prior to visiting it. I think educating yourself on the history of places you visit is so important and makes the experience more enriched. With that said, this spectacular estate is an absolute must see if you want to experience some Beverly Hills history.

Since we were already in the area, we stopped by the Beverly Hills Sign to be total tourists and take pictures. All around the city we saw people taking pictures and played spot the potential celebrity, joking we’d make an Instagram account of us taking pictures of them taking pictures. Then, on the way back to our Aunt’s house we stopped and browsed stores at The Grove. Think about Abbotsford’s High Street, then totally alter your outlook on outdoor malls. Imagine fountains, palm trees and a railway cart all amidst your favourite shops. Talk about a deluxe shopping experience. We decided to eat at the Cheesecake Factory. Before dinner even started, we had an inside joke with the waiter. He had asked how my sister wanted her meat for a burger and she said “normal”. All of us burst out laughing (it was funnier in the moment) even though we had never got asked that for a burger before.

***************************

After we ate, we drove through Malibu for the first time and up through the canyon to get back to the house. The last pictures may not be the most picture perfect, but the memory was as we drove down the highway with the sun setting listening to the perfect song that our Aunt insisted we play. Little moments throughout the trip made it seem even more surreal that we were there.

The next day, day three, is when we went on a tour around the Warner Bros. Studio. In that post I’ll include all about our experience, facts and of course lots of pictures. Hope everyone is having a lovely week!

Sending love around the world,
